Understanding Material & Finish
Matching

When planning your cabinetry project, it’s important to recognize that different materials respond to colors, textures, and finishes in unique ways. Materials such as MDF, thermofoil, and melamine each have their own surface properties and manufacturing characteristics, which can lead to slight differences in color tone, texture, and sheen. As a result, even when the same color is selected, minor variations may be visible across different materials or components. These natural differences are a normal part of the manufacturing process and contribute to the unique appearance of each finished product.

Why Finishes May Not Match Exactly

  • Different Material Types:
Cabinet components are often manufactured using different materials, such as MDF, thermofoil, and melamine. Because each material has unique surface characteristics, they can display color and texture differently.

  • Surface Texture & Light Reflection:
Painted, wrapped, and laminated surfaces reflect light in different ways. This can make two components with the same color appear slightly different depending on lighting conditions and viewing angles.
  • Thermofoil vs. Melamine:
Thermofoil doors typically have a smooth, seamless finish, while melamine components have a textured laminate surface. When placed side by side, these materials may not appear identical even when produced in a matching color.
  • Natural Color & Sheen Variations:
Although the same color name may be used across multiple products, each material accepts finishes differently. As a result, slight variations in shade, tone, or sheen are normal and should be expected as part of the manufacturing process.

Recommendation for a Perfect Match

To achieve the closest and most consistent appearance:

For the Best Match

To achieve the most consistent appearance throughout your project, we recommend selecting doors, panels, fillers, and toe kicks in the same material and finish whenever possible.

For Example:

  • If you choose painted MDF doors, select painted MDF panels and accessories to maintain a consistent finish.
  • If you choose thermofoil doors, we recommend pairing them with thermofoil MDF panels and accessories. While melamine panels and accessories may be a more economical option, slight color and finish variations can occur.

Benefits of Matching Materials:

  • Improved visual consistency throughout the project.
  • More accurate color and finish coordination.
  • A cleaner, more seamless overall appearance.
  • A polished and professionally finished result

By keeping materials consistent, you can achieve the closest possible match and the most cohesive look for your cabinetry project.

Important Note

Some minor variation is normal and expected across all cabinetry manufacturers. Choosing matching materials will always minimize differences and create the most cohesive finish.
